Xing Clay
Vessels, Autumn 2020.
I love throwing this clay, which has a slightly gritty feel to it. The clay keeps this sandy texture after firing, and its rustic aspect has inspired me to create vessels for plants and flowers.
The firing temperature ensures that the pots are water-tight. In addition, I've coated the inside of the vases with a transparent varnish to make cleaning easier.
The color of the finished piece continues to evolve in contact with the air. When it comes out of the kiln, the clay is a kind of burnt red. As time passes, the color deepens to a rich brownish-red with purple tinges.
This Xing clay is absolutely stunning without any embellishment. But sometimes I've added a touch of bronze patina for a bit of Parisian elegance.
